Abstract
The promise of asynchronous transfer mode, (ATM) has captured the imagination of the networking industry. Only ATM promises responsive, high-quality voice, video and data services over a shared network. This paper identifies one of the many emerging market opportunities for which ATM is suited. This highly visible market is the information superhighway, described by many as the Internet. Only ATM promises to enable exciting new applications in the area of on-line databases, while also reducing bandwidth unit cost. This paper concentrates on the justification of why ATM offers a way to clear up the Internet´s current bandwidth bottleneck within the local loop and to some degree globally, while providing a rich platform for tomorrow´s services
