Abstract :
In many signal processing applications, finite impulse response (FIR) filters with long coefficient sequences (more than a thousand coefficients) are required. To achieve high-speed operation, dedicated convolution processors have been used for FIR filtering. However, the number of coefficients that a single convolution processor chip can handle is relatively small, compared with the number of coefficients required. A straightforward way of using those convolution processors for FIR filtering of long coefficient sequences is to cascade them. A more efficient alternative method is introduced. By using a vector transformation with convolution processors, the total amount of hardware is reduced. Hardware implementation of the vector transformation is also discussed
