  • Abstract
A dynamic damper called a `damping-controllable dynamic damper´ has been developed to deal with the multiple frequency vibration of structures. This damper involves a controllable damping element making use of an electro-rheological fluid. A neural network-based adaptive control system is introduced and applied to this damper, taking advantage of the learning capability of the neural network. An appropriate controller is generated without an exact mathematical model of the dynamics of structure. The proposed self-organizing neural-net-controller system was applied to a control system for structural vibration using the damping-controllable dynamic damper and succeeded in generating an appropriate controller after reasonable numbers of adaptations. Numerical simulations and experiments show that the damper reduces not only the level of the first mode of the vibration but also that of the second mode
