Abstract :
Introducing redundancy in the network device implies adding some elements in the system to make it capable of fault tolerance. This element has to be physically present at the point of failure to take over. The element is a hardware that is the same in function and purpose as failing entity and would have a software component to pick relevant information from primary entity before failure. In routers, the failing entity can in the form of the routing element i.e. the route processor card. This paper gives an idea about 1:1 fault tolerance for router processors. Some common mechanisms and operations concerning redundancy were discussed here along with the process involved. A design for implementing redundancy in hot-standby mode has been discussed in subsequent sections.
