Abstract :
The field lines of Poynting vector around a small particle are investigated on the basis of classical Mie theory [G. Mie, (1908)]. A particle can effectively absorb incident energy from its surrounding regions, resulting in a great increasing in its optical absorption cross-section, which could be much greater than its geometrical cross-section. In general, the absorbed energy flows into the particle through some limited portion of its surface instead of the whole surface. For small ε" particle, the excited particle would release energy by dipole radiation but this radiation is confined in a small region near to the particle. Our simulation also reveals the generation of the "optical vortex" around the particle, as that could be used for a new principle of magnetic storage.
