Abstract
Normal modes, the eigenfunctions of the ocean waveguide, are useful in matched field processing and acoustic tomography applications. Mode filter design typically requires exact knowledge of the ocean environment, i.e., the sound speed profile. This paper describes a technique for designing mode filters using modeshapes derived from a uniform WKB-like approximation. The errors introduced by using the approximate modeshapes are analyzed.
