Abstract :
A method of suppressing the harmonic torques of electrical machines is presented. Three different saturated motors are simulated using finite element analysis. Harmonic voltages are introduced in the supply voltage in order to eliminate the air-gap harmonic torques. The harmonic voltages were selected manually based on basic electrical machine theory. The results show that torque ripple decreases significantly. Torque ripple could be totally removed with modern frequency converters in order to produce smooth torque. This would be beneficial especially in traction motor applications as well as in metal applications, where smooth torque guarantees better quality.
