Abstract :
When making a declaration of conformity for the EMC directive it is important that you have sufficient information about the EMC performance of your product to enable you to claim that you have taken due diligence. The best way of obtaining this information is to have your product tested. Ideally this would involve having all of the necessary tests carried out at a NAMAS accredited test house. Unfortunately, for many small companies producing products with limited production runs and small profit margins, this may not always be possible and some lower cost alternative may need to be sought. Remember when using the self certification in the harmonised standards route to EMC conformity you are stating that your product meets the requirements of all the relevant harmonised EMC standards. It is important that you read and understand them. This paper describes alternative lower cost test methods which may be used to gain information about the EMC performance of your product. The more the test method you use differs from that described in the standard the larger the measurement error is likely to be. Where possible try to quantify this error and build this in as a safety margin when determining your pass/fail limits
