Abstract :
The functional properties of inter-neuron communication are examined in order to identify the major points of control that influence inter-neuron connectivity, self-organization, and communication. Three mechanisms for inter-neuron communication are discussed: membrane transport communication, gap function communication, and synaptic communication. The discussion begins with a review of biological evidence, and then focuses on a functional analysis of each of the three communication mechanisms. The topics covered are: biological evidence; functional properties of membrane transport communication; functional properties of gap function communication; functional properties of synaptic communication; and comparative analysis of the different communication mechanisms
