Abstract :
The paper discusses Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machines (HESMs) principles and their application possibilities. HESMs combine both features of traditional wound field synchronous machines (SMs) and permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). Such electrical machines have two different rotor excitation sources: PM excitation and wound field excitation. The wound field excitation is used to control the excitation flux in the air gap, which makes voltage or reactive power control of HESMs possible.
