Abstract :
This paper deals with a new method of coating stainless steel with glassy carbon for use as bipolar plates. We were able to overcome the problem of the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion of stainless steel and carbon, with a proprietary surface treatment technique. The carbon-coated steel showed low resistance and very low corrosion rates and hence adequate for use in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
