  • Abstract
Tests of the carrier-to-nonlinear-distortion (C/NLD) are performed on a Fabry-Perot (F-P) laser. For the C/NLD levels necessary for digital transmission on subcarriers, the distortion is dominated by clipping and matches that of expensive, highly linear distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. Using an F-P laser, the equivalent of 80 compressed MPEG digital video channels is transmitted on 20 subcarriers with 6 MHz channel spacing using differential quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (DQPSK) modulation and a simple delay-line demodulator
