Abstract
A new method for the unintentional islanding test of grid-connected inverters is proposed. The current testing standard uses discrete RLC elements to simulate the test island. Even though the RLC simulated test island is useful for its reproducibility, relative scalability and setup time, as inverter power ratings increase so does the size, cost and setup time of the RLC simulated island. The proposed four quadrant current controlled current source can represent the function of the resonant part of the test island. It as well provide compensation for dynamic changes during the test and producing near worst case conditions for islanding. In this paper, proposed improvements to the unintentional islanding test are presented through replacing the resonant LC elements with an island stabilizing element (ISE).
