Abstract :
A new architecture called the dual-homing hierarchical self-healing ring (DH-HSHR) architecture is proposed to interconnect SONET self-healing rings, and the design of DH-HSHR network is considered. A DH-HSHR survives all single network failures, including single link and single node failures. A link cost model that incorporates both the route mileage and the capacity of the fiber systems is used. Network design is obtained through a heuristic algorithm. Simulated annealing is applied to further reduce the cost of the design. Numerical results are presented on the design of a DH-HSHR network and comparison is made between the heuristic and simulated annealing algorithms for various network sizes and demand patterns
