Abstract :
In this paper, we propose a bi-directional proxy streaming (BPS) scheme for caching the streaming video data in wireless base stations to improve the quality of wireless video streaming services. Our novel data caching method not only provides finer granularity of caching units to allow more effective cache replacement, but also offers a unique and natural way of handling the interactive VCR functions for video streaming. We further propose a cache replacement policy that uses sliding history window and tunable distributed victimization strategy to manage the cached video data in accordance with different QoS requirements of wireless video streaming services. The results of our performance study demonstrate that our BPS scheme outperforms the existing proxy caching schemes in terms of two commonly used QoS metrics, byte-hit ratio and delayed starts.
