Abstract
A circular slotted mushroom cell is designed and its dispersion diagram is compared to the regular mushroom cell. Then a patch antenna placed over a substrate constructed from the circular slotted mushroom cell is designed and compared to a patch antenna with the same dimensions placed over FR4 substrate. A patch antenna filled with the circular slotted mushroom cell is studied, then a patch antenna filled with the circular mushroom cell and placed over a metamaterial substrate constructed from the circular slotted mushroom cell is designed to operate in 2.5GHz, 2.7 GHz, 5.4 GHz, 8, 6 GHz and 10.5 GHz . The results show that a metamaterial patch antenna with a metamaterial substrate is a good candidate for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communication system. However a further improvement is needed to its gain and efficiency.
