Abstract :
An optoelectronic device called the optical distributed arithmetic unit (ODAU), which is capable of performing high-speed arithmetic, is presented. The ODAU, in its simplest form, consists of a one dimensional spatial light modulator (SLM) array optically coupled on a cell-by-cell basis to a one dimensional charge coupled detector (CCD) array. The device is briefly described, and a stochastic model of the ODAU is presented. The model (which incorporates a variety of noise sources) is general and can be adapted to describe a wide variety of charge-coupled devices. Statistical expressions for the charge distributions in the device and for performance measures are presented. In addition, simulation results confirming the validity of the analytical results are given. The ODAU is well suited for numeric as well as signal-processing applications. A number of application examples are given
