  • Abstract
Results are presented of an investigation aimed to characterize the multidimensional FIR (finite-impulse-response) filters (both 2-D and 3-D) that are optimal in the minimum-mean-square sense for the luminance-chrominance separation of phase alteration line (PAL)-coded signals. The method can be straightforwardly applied to other coding schemes, such as NTSC and SECAM, by the introduction of the appropriate system specifications and parameters. The present experiment shows that minimum-mean-square error criterion can be effectively applied to the design of three-dimensional PAL decoding filters
