Abstract :
Although rightly associated as a region historically fraught with change and turmoil, Latin America has been able to radically transform itself over the past two decades and increasingly become a leader in technological development. One key area of growth has been the rapid advance of satellite communications. It seems that at the current pace, the region will quickly reach the level of space technology seen in the industrialized world. The article is a brief review of the rapid ascension of the region as a dominant leader in the world-wide ldquospace racerdquo. There is also an extensive explanation on the basics of what constitutes ldquosatellite communicationsrdquo due to the multi-disciplinary approach that is accessible to decision makers either possessing or lacking technical expertise in the subject.
