Abstract :
In the 1990s undersea lightwave systems will grow in capacity and complexity. The first application of `next-generation´ undersea technology will be the optical fibre TAT-9 system, which is scheduled for commissioning in 1991. This system will have shore landings in five countries, will have undersea multiplex capabilities, and have a transmission capacity of about 1120 Mb/s. The author reviews the growth of cable circuits in the North Atlantic, discusses some of the reliability requirements for undersea systems, and then gives an outlook on the technology that might be used in future undersea lightwave systems
