The thermal condition of machine tools can profoundly affect the dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts; consequently, the reduction of its influence has become increasingly important to modern manufacturing. For a three-axis computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tool equipped with a ball-screw driving system, its thermal expansion is primarily caused by the friction heat generated at the screw shaft, nut, end-bearings, and slide ways. The friction heat generated at these parts has major effects on machining accuracy, especially on the positioning accuracy along each axis. This paper investigates the thermal behavior of a CNC machine tool by machining several workpieces at different thermal conditions, analyzing the machined workpiece accuracy using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) system, and directly showing the relationship between workpiece dimensional accuracy and the machine tool´s thermal status.
