Abstract :
A few examples of performance characteristics demanded by industrial electric drive applications are discussed. Fundamental principles of variable structure control (VSC) and sliding mode control (SLMC) are presented. Application of VSC/SLMC in industrial applications is surveyed. Academic research of VSC/SLMC as used in AC and DC drives is reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of using SLMC/VSC in practical applications are analyzed
