Abstract :
An overview of coherent lightwave systems technology and applications is presented. It is concluded that the advantages of these systems include improved receiver sensitivity, selectivity, and tunability. Together these offer totally new capabilities that can be used effectively in lightwave transmission networks to more fully utilize the enormous capacity of single-mode fiber. It is further concluded that for commercial application of coherent lightwave technology, improved device characteristics plus significant design and development activity are still needed
