Abstract :
The author explains the fundamental requirement for cheaper and more reliable access to space which can only be accomplished through a new system, describes the fundamental characteristics of such a system, and then compares the payback of such a system against existing systems. The driving feature of the advanced launch system (ALS) is that it is being designed as a transportation system. It will rely on high reliability and short postfailure standdowns to insure high availability. One of the primary goals of the ALS program is to reduce the recurring costs associated with US launch operations
