Abstract
This paper gives a summary of research to date at the University of Sheffield on the miniaturisation of periodic surfaces for use in antenna applications. The paper discusses the use of lumped inductors and capacitors in Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) and unit cell sizes of ¿/36 are demonstrated through simulation and measurement. Initial results of a distributed design with no components are shown with unit cell sizes of ¿/15. The miniaturisation of High Impedance Surfaces (HIS) have also been demonstrated using lumped capacitors and demonstrated using simple dipole antennas. Unit cell sizes of ¿/49 are demonstrated and input match, radiation patterns and current distributions are presented.
