Abstract :
In this study the authors used the experimental model of periodic breathing, generated both spontaneously by chronic heart failure (CHF) patients and voluntarily by normal subjects, and linear system analysis to investigate the reflex response of the heart rate (HR) to very slow (<0.04 Hz) changes of lung volumes. The authors found that the magnitude of the transfer function between instantaneous lung volume (ILV) and HR around 0.02 Hz was significantly greater than that at the frequency of phasic respiratory activity (≈0.3 Hz) and that this different response was significantly accentuated in CHF patients. Slow changes of ILV led corresponding changes of HR, whereas the opposite was found for phasic respiratory activity. The ILV-HR gain at the frequency of phasic respiratory, activity was similar in the two groups
