Abstract
A region segmentation method for document images by simple labeling is proposed. This segmentation scheme utilizes a 4-connected labeled area as a measure of the discriminant classifier. This measure does not depend on the geometric pattern structure of bilevel representations. The qualitative trend of the pseudocontinuous tone and the behavior of bilevel components is first discussed. Next, two identification algorithms are introduced; one is implemented in the whole image plane, while the other is applied to subdivided matrix data. Some experiments that confirm the system performance are described.<>
