Abstract :
A cost-optimal control algorithm of a force-commutated supply which makes it possible to obtain a power factor approaching unity is proposed. The economic aspects of such a design are discussed in detail and are compared with the traditional solution of a phase-controlled input converter. It is pointed out that the investment costs (components and manufacturing) of a supply-friendly rectifier (current or voltages source) are lower than that of the line-commutated rectifier (with compensator). However, this difference is very small at present. It can be expected that in the future this difference will continually increase. The choice of the rectifier configuration depends on a particular application. If operation is not continuous, it can be more advantageous to use the force-commutated rectifier because of lower investment costs
