Abstract :
This document examines the standards associated with the short circuit current ratings (SCCRs) for surge protective devices (SPDs). A review of the IEEE, UL, and NFPA documents is used to determine why SCCRs are required for SPDs and what is the correct methodology for determining the coordination of the SPD and the electrical distribution. An example is provided detailing the proper and improper application of the SPD as it relates to the SCCR. For improper applications of an SPD, remedial actions are presented
