Abstract :
In many regions of Canada, power network equipment, including outdoor insulators, is affected by ice and snow accretion. From modest beginnings in the 70´s, research in that domain, due to the progressive interest and involvement of utilities, has increased in such a way that Canada has now become world leader in atmospheric icing research. The main purpose of this presentation is to give an overview of the Canadian R&D related to the flashover phenomenon, mitigation methods and design of insulators under icing conditions
