Abstract :
A thorough study of the effect of the characteristics of the insulating material on the behaviour of an electric arc is conducted. The results led to a technique of current limitation by lamination of any movable part other than the contact itself. The advantage of this method is that the current can be interrupted by making full use of the energy which is present at the time of a short circuit, without interposing mechanical systems which, due to their inertia, would increase the time taken. The device used to achieve such current limitations is described, and the effect which the geometrical parameters of the chamber. as well as the characteristics of the insulating material used, can have on the behavior of the electric arc at the time of an interruption of a short-circuit current are discussed
