Abstract :
Broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is added to the pump signal of a wavelength converter using cross gain modulation (XGM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) to simulate it having passed through several erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs). Improvements in system performance are observed when the SOA is highly saturated, and these results are mirrored in a simple steady-state nonlinear gain SOA model
