  • Abstract
This paper is designed to give some insight into three aspects of human language technologies: (1) the variety of scientific specialities involved, e.g. signal processing, modal logic, linguistics, lexicography and neurophysiology, as well as all aspects of computer science; (2) the vast breadth of the applications that can be developed, from the analysis of acoustic signals to finding relevant content in a text database, and from voice print identification to dialogue; and (3) the value and range of the product markets that can be exploited: besides the evident and direct products in dictation and word processing, and the voice control of systems, information and transaction services of all kinds can be improved
