Abstract :
A liquid-crystal (LC) phase modulator was investigated as a possible substitute for the electrically deformable oil film used for image generation in some large-screen projectors. The LC causes a voltage-dependent phase shift of the incident light, which is converted into amplitude-modulated light by means of a schlieren optical system. To achieve great optical efficiency, the LC cell is designed to work without polarizers. When used with thin-film-transistor arrays as drivers, a grey-scale projection is possible.<>
