  • Abstract
The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method has become a powerful tool for analyzing electromagnetic problems with complex geometries. The strength of the method is its simplicity and efficiency for modeling the electromagnetic field within a practical level of accuracy. On the other hand, antenna efficiency is usually calculated from dissipated power, which is a Joule loss, and the input power of the antenna in the original FDTD calculation. However, the results indicate an inappropriate value, even if the geometry is as relatively simple as a planar antenna. The paper points out the difficulties and proposes a solution for the planar antenna case.
