Abstract :
Summary form only given. The Naval Research Laboratory ZFX facility has been used to form dense Z-pinches from single fibers composed of frozen deuterium (D2), deuterated polyethylene (CD2), carbon, or carbon clad with silver. The maximum current through all these pinches was slightly less than 1 MA with a risetime of about 670 ns. Experiments in both 125-μm-diameter D2 and 40-μm-diameter CD2 fibers showed that the pinch was stable for times up to 400 ns and currents up to 650 kA. Pinches formed from pure 7-μm-diameter graphite fibers were stable for less than 300 kA and times of 150 ns. The behavior of pinches formed from 7-μm-diameter graphite fibers encased in an 8000-Å silver coating was also investigated
