  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. A module that is designed to phase-lock up to seven magnetrons, each at gigawatt power levels, has been constructed and operated. Phase locking is accomplished by connecting vanes on different magnetrons with short sections of waveguide and demonstrated by measuring the relative phase between signals coupled out of waveguides from any two of the magnetrons with a commercial phase discriminator. The CAMEL-X machine (1 MV, 2.5 Ω, 100 ns) is the pulse power generator for the entire module. All the magnetrons are immersed in a common vacuum chamber and a common magnetic field produced by a single Helmholtz coil pair, energized by a 300-kJ capacitor bank to produce a 10-kG Bz. This design leads to a compact module, e.g. the magnet coils have an inner radius of only 37.5 cm. Experiments have been conducted with a half module, consisting of three or four magnetrons and a full module consisting of six or seven magnetrons
