Abstract :
Summary form only given. A general dimensionless approach based upon the complex form of Poynting´s theorem has been applied to the analysis of the relativistic planar magnetron. An important aspect of this formulation is the way in which it interrelates the basic scaling involved in energy storage, radiation generation through beamwave interaction, and the nonlinearities which eventually cause saturation. Attention was focused on energy storage and basic scaling in the early stages of magnetron preoscillation and on their relation to initial spoke formation. The capacity of a resonant structure to store electromagnetic energy can be shown to depend upon the product of a group of dimensional factors and a universal dimensionless capacitance defined along the dispersion relation for the structure
