Abstract :
Summary form only given. A report is given of three classes of runs being performed with WARP, a particle-in-cell code being developed for heavy ion fusion accelerator studies, using the code´s 3d3v package, WARP6. The first series consists of infinite-beam (periodic in z) studies to validate the code and help in understanding particle and mesh requirements. The second series consists of runs with cigar-shaped beams and an applied axial confining force, a time-average of the `ears´ applied to pulses in an actual machine; 3-D equilibria are sought. The third series models the drift-compression process. whereby the pulse is shortened and the current increased. The effects of a single misaligned magnetic quadrupole and of a series of randomly misaligned elements are being studied. A new scheme for vectorizing the charge deposition has been developed. It obtains long vectors by processing a number of particles at a time, depositing to four points at once from each particle
