Abstract :
Voltage surge resonance on a transmission network during repetitive lightning strokes or multiple switching operations is presented. The incident surges setup standing waves on the line/cable section bounded by high reflection terminal components such as open line or transformers. Under appropriate boundary conditions the oscillating voltage surges are likely to amplify during back and forth reflections. The gain conditions become satisfied if the arrival of subsequent strokes on the point of incidence is synchronized to the arrival of reflected surges after a few round trips. A synchronous surge amplification model based on general theory of microwave resonators is attempted to explain accelerated voltage amplification on the transmission network
