Under the background of collaborative R&D, this paper first analyses the main intellectual property protection mechanisms (IPPMs) used by high-tech enterprises in three phases, based on IP risks that they face. In a second step, the effectiveness of different IPPMs and their main influence factors are examined by a case study. It is found that top management and human resource management (HRM) are most effective, whereas punitive measures in legal mechanism are least effective, and the choice of IPPMs is influenced by factors like trust, previous good records, learning capability and characteristic of collaboration.
