Abstract
The paper reports the investigations into the compensation of reactive power and harmonics using power electronic techniques based on the generalised instantaneous power theory. The characteristics of the decomposed generalised instantaneous power waveforms are analysed with reference to the balanced and unbalanced, linear and nonlinear power systems. It is shown that the power quality can effectively be improved using power electronic techniques and control strategies designed on the basis of the decomposed instantaneous power components
