Abstract
In this paper, a rigorous stability analysis for the alternating direction implicit (ADI) formulation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with perfectly matched layer (PML) absorber is presented. The inhomogeneous PML medium is considered in the stability analysis. In this work, it is found that the ADI-FDTD method with PML will be instable in the PML interface and inside the PML regions. Both theoretical and numerical results are demonstrated to show the instability of this scheme
