Abstract
Although Japan is an economic superpower, her contribution to global R&D is easily overlooked. However, it is a mistake to ignore Japanese research capabilities. The research base is diverse and well funded (if poorly co-ordinated). Indeed, Japan is now the only G7 country which is increasing public sector research funding. For the UK´s scientists and engineers, Japan represents a tremendous opportunity. We make excellent partners. Over 150 Japanese companies now have R&D centres in the UK. Universities and national institutes have over 200 research partnerships with the UK. There are formal accords between the major funding bodies of both countries. Each year, British industrialists make countless visits to Japan to look at examples of best practice
