Abstract :
A STATCOM-based SVC rated at 0 to 225 MVAr will be installed on NGC´s 400 kV grid system to enable the network to carry increased power flows from the North to the South of England. This SVC will be easily relocatable to other substations if this is required by the changing needs of the grid system. It will meet the performance criteria which were specified by NGC and the incorporation of a STATCOM will give several advantages, including better speed of response and smaller space requirements, compared with conventional SVCs. The new STATCOM technology has other potential applications to power flow control in the future and will contribute to maintaining the long-term integrity of the NGC transmission system
