Abstract
Metamaterial ground planes (MGP) that exhibit negative reflection phase values are applied for the first time in the planar resonant cavity antenna configuration. The negative reflection phase values alter the resonance condition of the cavity and significantly reduce the antenna profile to subwavelength values. A simple dipole positioned between the PRS and the ground is utilized as the excitation. Full wave 3D simulations of finite size antennas are carried out in order to accurately study the effect of the MGP on the antenna directivity. A thin planar antenna is fabricated and the measured performance is presented.
