Abstract :
Psychoactive pharmaceuticals developed to treat mental disorders are routinely screened for their ability to produce behavioral activation. Despite many drawbacks, photobeam crossings have been the standard measure of behavioral activation in rodents. This paper describes the use of continuous-wave Doppler radar (CWDR) as an alternative to the standard photobeam box. The CWDR waveform is the direct result of the Doppler shift induced by movement in the field of a high-frequency radio emission. Our data demonstrate a significant correlation between standard photobeam crossing data and the time-integrated RMS value of the CWDR signal. However, the CWDR technique was immune to errors evident in the photobeam crossing data. In addition, the CWDR signal may provide more detailed information about stereotypical movements in place which are not apparent from photobeam crossings
