Abstract :
Potential manufacturers of alternative technologies have promised enhanced performance in comparison to current LCD products. However, the rate of improvement of the incumbent technology has often been underestimated. The commercial success of organic LEDs (OLEDs) will thus depend as much on the future improvements in LCDs as on the implementation of the advantages of OLED devices. Potential manufacturers of OLEDs face three major challenges, technology maturation, cost-effective fabrication and business strategy. The immediate challenge is to solve the remaining materials problems and obtain a compatible set of saturated RGB emitters with high efficiency and long-lifetime under normal operating conditions.
