Abstract :
In this paper, three new tag antenna models were developed for paper reel identification: skew bow-tie, skew patch and skew sandglass tag antennas. The skew tag antenna operation was evaluated with a scalable paper reel model in a laboratory environment and at a paper mill where the tags were put into real paper reels between the core and paper. Improved paper reel identification was improved than with conventional bow-tie tags. The skew tags could be read through 58 cm thick paper layer in a reel. With skew bow-tie the paper reel could be identified from 270deg around the reel, and at 135deg the identification distance was over a meter from the paper reel surface. From the tag surface the read range results are 58 cm longer, so the skew tag antennas achieved improved read ranges for paper reel identification
