            Abstract :
This paper discusses participation by the Air Force´s Joint Modeling and Simulation System (J-MASS) program in the development of the Department of Defense (DoD) High Level Architecture (HLA) baseline. J-MASS is participating in the development of a prototype federation using the HLA baseline. The HLA “city architecture” will provide the enabling technology to allow components of the Air Force hierarchy of models to interoperate in both a “horizontal” and a “vertical” dimension. J-MASS engineering level models will be joined in a federation using HLA protocols to insure the HLA adequately addresses the unique data, timing, and control problems that high-detail, high-fidelity modeling demands
